The 8 Best Handheld Vacuums of 2023, Tested and Reviewed (2024)

The 8 Best Handheld Vacuums of 2023, Tested and Reviewed (1)

Not every big mess requires a big vacuum. A powerful handheld vacuum tackles all kinds of spills and might make you rethink your full-sized vacuum if you’re short on storage. The best handheld vacuums can suck up cracker crumbs in a car seat, pet hair embedded into the sofa, and kitchen spills with ease—sometimes even faster than a traditional vacuum.

“When purchasing a handheld vacuum, one of the most important factors to consider is what kind of surfaces you’ll be using it on,” says Brian Shaunfield, Lowe's Store Manager. “Some handheld vacuums work best on carpet and rugs, while others are better suited for hardwood floors or tile. You can use some models on all types of flooring, but you’ll want to ensure this before purchasing a new vacuum.”

We tested 17 models and carefully selected the best handheld vacuums for every cleaning need, taking into consideration budget, power features, and suction strength. We scrutinized each vacuum for clean up time, ergonomic design, noise level, and overall value for the price.

Why You Should Get It

  • This model has impressive battery life on both high and low settings.

Keep in Mind

  • The power and suction strength decreases as the dustbin fills up.

Earning a near-perfect score during our tests, the Iris USA Handheld Vacuum is small but mighty, and the best handheld vacuum cleaner for value and quality. Despite its size, this vacuum sped through our various tests, clearing all debris quickly—especially when on the highest setting—and outperforming most vacuums in efficiency.

Surprisingly, it also sucked up hair faster than most models. But what impressed us the most was the battery life, which was still going strong after we completed testing on both high and low speeds. While not obnoxiously loud, the vacuum does produce a high-pitched sound that can be irritating for some. The vacuum does waver in power and suction strength when the dustbin is getting close to being full. And due to its small size, it fills up quickly.

However, the smaller head is perfect for sucking up debris in tiny areas such as cup holders. And we loved how easy it was to maneuver the lightweight unit. Because it’s a little over 1 pound, it would make a great vacuum for children to use if you’re teaching your child or tween about cleaning.

Why You Should Get It

  • The lightweight design is perfect for those with low mobility or time-consuming cleaning projects.

Keep in Mind

  • Emptying the dustbin is a bit of an ordeal compared to other models.

The IonVac Lightweight Handheld Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is proof that you don’t need to break the bank for a quality (and powerful) handheld vacuum. At under $30, this is a great buy and one of the best handheld vacuums for cleaning up small debris, such as food, dirt, and fur.

There are some trade-offs for the impressive price tag: It doesn’t have the most suction power, and the attachments aren’t as effective as you’d find with more expensive models. Emptying the dustbin is also more complicated than other vacuums, as you need to twist off the front of the vacuum and then pull the filter out to dump debris.

At less than 0.5 pounds, this vacuum is incredibly lightweight and compact, making it perfect for dorms, RVs, and other small spaces, or for those with mobility issues. The IonVac isn’t as loud as other handheld vacuum cleaners, and we could carry on a normal conversation while vacuuming. However, it does produce a very high-pitched sound that can be annoying.

Why You Should Get It

  • The dirt eject feature makes emptying the dustbin a breeze.

Keep in Mind

  • The lithium-ion battery can take up to 6 hours to fully charge.

If you want all the bells and whistles, the Shark UltraCyclone Pro is the best handheld vacuum cleaner out there. We love the sleek design, the matte green color, the comfortable grip handle, and the powerful suction strength. (It was so powerful it lifted the carpet up and other fabrics in multiple tests.)

But the feature we love the most is the one-touch button for emptying the dustbin. This makes one-handed vacuuming a cinch for multitaskers. The crevice tool also outperformed other crevice attachments we tested, and we were highly impressed with how effective the tool was at reaching and sucking out debris from the trickiest places.

This vacuum and attachment would be perfect for small areas that collect tiny pieces of debris, such as high chairs and car seats. What we don’t like is the shorter battery life and that the battery can take up to 6 hours to charge.

Why You Should Get It

  • This vacuum is much quieter than other cordless handheld models we’ve tried.

Keep in Mind

  • The dustbin capacity is limited, which means more trips to the waste bin.

While nearly every vacuum on this list is cordless, the Nicebay Cordless Handheld Vacuum is a particular favorite. We noted during our tests that this vacuum is overall less noisy and doesn’t produce such a high-pitched sound compared to other vacuums.

We could carry on a conversation with just a slight elevation in volume as opposed to shouting while operating this vacuum. If you’re watching TV or listening to the radio, you’ll probably need to bump up the volume, but it won't have to be blaring to compete with the sound of the vacuum.

As for performance, the vacuum cleaned debris well, especially with the attachments for smaller nooks and crannies, and the suction power was fantastic for embedded pet hair in the carpet. However, the dustbin is extremely small—we had to empty it once during testing and found it nearly full again by the time we were done. If you have a larger area to clean, such as an SUV or sectional sofa, you might have to stop midway, which isn’t ideal when you’re trying to clean quickly.

Why You Should Get It

  • The oversized dustbin (especially relative to the overall vacuum size) is perfect for larger messes.

Keep in Mind

  • At 5 pounds, it’s quite heavy and can be difficult to maneuver.

The Bissell Cleanview Deluxe Corded Handheld Vacuum has incredible suction power, and the compact design makes this one of the best handheld vacuums if you’re tight on storage space. Yet despite its overall small size, the dustbin compartment is surprisingly huge compared to the rest of the appliance.

However, when you do eventually have to empty the dustbin, it’s a bit more challenging than other models we tested. The button to empty the bin is right under the handle, making it difficult to both hold and release the bin at the same time.

We praised this vacuum during our tests for picking up nearly all debris in one single pass—except pet hair, which mostly stuck to the outside of the rubber pet hair attachment instead of sucking into the dustbin. The extra-large handle on top makes the vacuum super easy to pick up when sitting down compared to other vacuums with handles built into the unit. That said, it weighs 5 pounds, which is pretty heavy for a handheld.

Why You Should Get It

  • This handheld vacuum works well on all types of surfaces, from carpet to tile flooring.

Keep in Mind

  • There’s only one power mode.

This is the best handheld vacuum cleaner for all kinds of pet-related messes—hair on the sofa, kibble on the kitchen floor, tracked-in dirt from muddy paws. We gave the Bissell high marks across the board for all surface types, including carpet, hardwood floors, and tile. It works beautifully on high-pile rugs and fabric sofas, too, though it can take a couple of passes to pick up all embedded hair.

We loved how lightweight this model is as well as how comfortable the handle grip is to hold while moving. Set-up is simple and attachments easily pop on and off. This model only has one power mode, so there’s no high suction setting to switch to for super-embedded hairs, though we still found it pretty effective even without that.

Emptying the dustbin is fairly easy, but you do have to remove the filter prior to getting fur out. This requires two hands to hold each side of the vacuum, set the handle part to the side, and then remove the filter. You also have to remember to put the filter back in before you reattach the handle, so it’s a more cumbersome process.

Why You Should Get It

  • A washable and reusable filter saves you money over time.

Keep in Mind

  • The long nozzle requires two hands to operate.

This Black+Decker vacuum was made to tackle your messy car with a nozzle attachment for any random debris. And pet hair is no problem with this device’s suction strength, so it’s the best handheld vacuum for road trips with your dogs. We praised this vacuum for easy maneuverability, noting that the long hose makes it easy to get into nooks and crannies as well as larger areas such as floorboards.

Because this design features such a long hose, it requires two hands to hold the base and operate the wand. At around 3 pounds, it’s on the lighter side of the vacuums we tested, so it’s not such an ordeal to lift.

We really liked that this vacuum features a larger dustbin, which comes in handy when cleaning a family van or larger SUV. The dustbin has a washable and reusable filter to save you money over time. This is one of the louder vacuums tested, but we could still hold a conversation while operating it.

Why You Should Get It

  • This vacuum picks up most debris in one quick pass thanks to super strong suction power.

Keep in Mind

  • The battery and charger are sold separately.

The RidGid 18V Cordless Hand Vacuum is a clear winner when it comes to powerful suction strength, especially when tested against various messes and surfaces in the car. While other vacuums require specific nozzles for different spills, this vacuum sucks debris out of deep crevices easily and with no attachments.

It gets the job done in one pass almost every time, which is clutch for fast cleanup in the kitchen if you have a curious toddler or pet. We did notice that smaller debris particles such as sand took more than one pass to completely disappear, but compared to other vacuums we tested, larger debris was eliminated in a flash.

For the power, this vacuum is surprisingly lightweight and compact. And we especially like the flat base design so you can set it down easily without it tipping over. While the dustbin is easy to twist on and off to open, the filter isn’t as easy to clean as other vacuums. We also don’t love that the battery and charger need to be purchased separately.

The 9 Best HEPA Vacuums for Tackling Dust, Pollen, and Bacteria in Your Home

The Bottom Line

When it comes to suction power, battery life, and price, the Iris USA Handheld Vacuum checks all the boxes. The IonVac Lightweight Handheld Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is a great option if you’re on a budget, and it's an ultra lightweight vacuum that might be ideal for those with low mobility or longer cleaning projects.

Our Testing Process

To find the best handheld vacuums, we evaluated dozens of models using a predetermined methodology. We assessed vacuums based on seven factors: weight, noise, battery life, effectiveness, maneuverability, portability, and ease of emptying. We first weighed each vacuum and used a decibel reader to measure the noise level when turned on. Then we timed each vacuum with a stopwatch to measure the battery life on the highest setting.

We performed a series of tests with debris, noting how long it took each vacuum to pick up dirt and remove pet hair from fabric as well as how effective each model was at sucking up different sizes of debris. We evaluated the wet vacuums further by timing how long it took each model to clean ½ cup of water.

We also tested overall maneuverability and portability, noting how easy it was to hold each vacuum as well as how the attachments and nozzles moved around surfaces and areas of different sizes. Each handheld vacuum was evaluated based on how easy it was to empty the dustbin. We ranked each handheld vacuum in the seven categories and calculated the average scores.

Other Handheld Vacuums We Tested

Bissell AeroSlim Lithium Ion Cordless Handheld Vacuum

This is an incredibly lightweight, nimble vacuum, and we loved how easy it was to get into the smallest nooks and crannies in a car. However, while it was powerful enough to suck up larger items such as cereal, it was no match for pet hair and other embedded debris.

Black+Decker dustbuster Handheld Vacuum, Cordless, AdvancedClean+ HHVK515J00FF

We gave this vacuum average scores across the board. It’s fairly lightweight, easy to maneuver, and tackles most crumbs and debris in one sweeping pass. But for the price, we wish this model came with extra attachments and nozzles.

Black+Decker Gen11 AdvancedClean+ Handheld Vacuum - HHVK320J12

While we liked how easy it was to empty the dustbin, this vacuum is just too loud compared to others with similar suction strength and power. During our testing, it drowned out TV and radio audio, and we almost needed to shout in order to be heard over the vacuum noise.

What to Know About Handheld Vacuums Before Shopping

Settings

When purchasing a vacuum of any kind, look for settings appropriate to the intended use. For example, if you have more hardwood or bare flooring than carpet, you’ll want to check that there’s a setting for that.

Suction strength is also important—more suction power can help with tough debris such as embedded pet hair. Most vacuums feature a high and a low or standard suction setting to toggle between for easy cleanups on tile flooring or harder jobs like pet hair on upholstered furniture. “Handheld vacuums vary in power, and the best option for you is based on your unique needs,” Shaunfield says. “Some models offer up to four times more suction than other models.”

Battery Life

The average handheld vacuum cleaner has a run time of about 15 to 20 minutes without stopping, but that doesn’t always mean it can run that long at full suction power. We tested each vacuum on high and timed how long each battery lasted. Most fell in the 10 to 15 minute range, while some didn’t even last 10 minutes on one charge.

Battery type is another factor to consider when shopping for handheld vacuum cleaners as lithium ion batteries can take hours to fully recharge. Some vacuums will need to be charged overnight straight out of the package in order to operate.

Weight

Handheld vacuums range in weight, but most are typically between 1 to 5 pounds. Vacuums that weigh around 1 pound are ideal for those with low mobility or large areas to clean, but these models often don’t have the most powerful batteries—and, therefore, shorter battery life. You’ll often find stronger suction power and longer battery life in heavier models, but they can be cumbersome if you’re tackling bigger tasks like cleaning a car interior.

Dustbin Size

A vacuum’s dustbin can tell you how often you’ll have to stop and empty it out between chores. Dustbins can vary in size anywhere between 3 to 30 ounces; more compact models usually have less than 10 ounces of dustbin space and larger vacuums often hold 20 ounces or more of debris.

Accessories

The most important accessories—the ones that make you feel like you’ve discovered a secret cleaning hack—are the attachments that help with specific jobs. Crevice tools “allow you to clean tight corners and small spaces with ease,” Shaunfield says. Brush tools are great for getting at deeply embedded hair and dust. And if you’re tight on storage space, Shaunfield recommends looking for a handheld vacuum that comes with wall-mounted storage.

Your Questions, Answered

What is the most powerful handheld vacuum?

Power can be measured in two ways: battery life and suction strength. For some jobs, such as cleaning out an SUV, it’s beneficial to look for a handheld vacuum cleaner with a powerful battery and longer battery life so you can knock out the task without pausing to recharge. But for overs, the best handheld vacuum cleaners have the most powerful suction. You can tell that by looking at the vacuum’s air wattage; like with full-size vacuums, the higher the watts, the more powerful the suction. Heavy-duty handheld vacuums often have an air wattage above 60.

Another thing to consider is that, in our experience, some vacuums will lose suction power as the battery drains and/or as the dustbin fills up. This can be especially frustrating during longer cleaning jobs.

How long does a handheld vacuum battery last?

“Handheld vacuums have a range of runtimes depending on model and battery size,” says Shaunfield. “But you can expect to get between 15 and 20 minutes of runtime on a cordless handheld vacuum.” Most models we tested had a battery life somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes when run continuously on high.

How much is a handheld car vacuum?

According to Shaunfield, handheld vacuums can range in price from $25 to $200. Most of the vacuums we tested are between $50 and $100, with our top pick, the Iris USA Handheld Vacuum, under $75. Our budget option, the IonVac Lightweight Handheld Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, is under $30.

What is a good weight for a handheld vacuum? “Handheld vacuums come in a range of sizes and weights so the best option depends on your intended use,” says Shaunfield. “Some handheld vacuums weigh as little as 1.2 pounds, while heavier-duty options may weigh closer to 3 or 4 pounds.” During testing, we found lighter vacuums around 1 pound often stood up perfectly well to models between 3 and 5 pounds, especially for everyday messes, but usually had a slightly shorter battery life.
