What does a broken hand look like on the outside? ›

The symptoms of a hand fracture include: Bruising and swelling of any part of the hand. Deformity in the joint, such as a finger that is crooked. Numbness, stiffness, or the inability to move the hand, fingers, wrist, and thumb.

It is possible for a fractured hand to heal on its own. However, if it is not treated properly, it is more likely to heal improperly. The bones, in particular, may not line up properly. This is referred to as a malunion.

Many people with a fractured scaphoid think they have a sprained wrist instead of a broken bone because there is no obvious deformity and very little swelling.

Get medical help as soon as possible if you think you've broken a bone. If you think you may have broken your toe or finger, you can go to a minor injury unit or urgent care centre. Go to your nearest A&E for a broken arm or leg.

Some hand fractures require wearing a splint or a cast. Some need to be repaired with surgery.

If you think you might have a broken hand, see a doctor immediately, especially if you have numbness, swelling or trouble moving your fingers. A delay in diagnosis and treatment can lead to poor healing, decreased range of motion and decreased grip strength.

In a third-degree injury, the ligament, muscle, or tendon tears completely, causing pain and limited range of motion. You may even hear a “pop” as it happens. You should consult a doctor if you experience severe pain, if any pain lasts for more than several days, or if you have trouble using your hand.

Your hand can also be tender to touch, and you may experience swelling and bruising immediately after impact. Of course, there are more obvious signs such as a crooked finger or the inability to move your fingers and thumb!

A doctor may try to fit the broken bones back into place with their hands before applying a splint or cast. You'll be given medicine before this happens so you will not feel any pain. If you had a very bad break, surgery may be carried out to fix broken bones back into place.

If left untreated or not treated appropriately, a hand fracture can lead to loss of hand mobility. People at higher risk of developing a hand fracture are those who have osteoporosis, play contact sports, or those who have poor nutritional habits.

Can you still move your fingers if your hand is broken? If you cannot move your hand or fingers after an injury, it is likely broken. Depending on the fracture, you may still be able to move your fingers. The ability to wiggle your fingers does not automatically mean your hand is not broken.

Recovery times

After a metacarpal fracture of the hand, most of the healing happens between 3 to 4 weeks. It's normal to have aches and discomfort beyond this. This often happens when you try activities you haven't done for a while. It's also normal for the area to be more sensitive for several months after the injury.
