This Chocolate Cream Pie is both rich and creamy. This pierecipe is quick and super easy since it just uses a store bought crust. We will be making a few pies for Easter guests now that my fear of making these quick and easy pies with a store bought crust has diminished. I shared my fear of making pies with you when I shared my yummy Coconut Cream Pie with you last week.

Chocolate Cream Pie

Each and every holiday, my grandmother would decide which pies were going to be included in the dessert line up. She would ask all of us for our input on whatpies to be included. My uncle and I were the Chocolate Cream Pie fans of the family. Just the thought of a holiday without chocolate cream pie would not make for a good holiday for either of us. One year, she was running a bit behind and didn’t have the time to finish up all of the pies. It was one sad day, ha ha. I still remember chocolate pie not being included with all her other yummy desserts.

After moving to Cincy, I no longer had grandmas pie for our holiday dinners. I will quite often put in an order at Frisch’s for a chocolate pie but it’s just not my grandmother’s chocolate pie.

Since her recipe is actually quite simple, I decided I would give it ago and make my own chocolate cream pie this year. I wanted to do a test run on this recipe to see if I could even come close to replicating it.

She does make her own pie crust from time to time. When she is pressed for time, she will purchase store bought pie crusts. Sometimes she will use a graham cracker crust, sometimes a chocolate cookie crust. But the pie is always pure chocolate heaven with whichever crust she made. A simple dessert that tastes delish.

I decide I would use a store bought crust for this pie just like I did with the coconut cream pie. You Could also use my Easy 4 Ingredient Homemade Pie Crust. The store bought works great with both of these cream pies. Plus, I wanted to keep the recipe as simple as possible.

The filling comes together so easily. Just a few minutes of cooking and it is ready to cool. I was amazed with how rich and smooththis chocolate pie turned out with so few ingredients.

The hubby and kids were super excited to see that I was making a chocolate pie. They even commented how long it has been since we enjoyed grandmas chocolate pie. Each of them enjoyed a piece after dinner and all of them came back for seconds later in the evening. I managed to get just once slice. Yup… just one slice. I know I will be the first in line to snag a piece of this pie on Sunday when we dig in to Easter desserts.

FAQs

What is the difference between chocolate cream pie and chocolate silk pie? ›

The Crust: Chocolate cream pie traditionally sits on a cookie crumb crust, while French silk pie traditionally sits on a pastry crust. The Filling: Chocolate cream pie filling has a denser, pudding-like consistency, while French silk pie filling has a lighter, airier, more mousse-like consistency.

What is a chocolate cream pie made of? ›

Chocolate Cream Pie Ingredients

Sugar: Start with 1 ½ cups of white sugar. Egg yolks: Use just the egg yolks for the rich filling. Cocoa powder: Of course, you'll need unsweetened cocoa powder for this chocolatey pie! Cornstarch: Cornstarch helps thicken the filling.

What thickens a cream pie? ›

All-purpose flour is an easy solution, as you're sure to have it in your pantry. Since it's lower in starch, you'll use more of it than you would higher-starch thickeners. Quick-cooking tapioca makes filling bright and clear, but also gives it a stippled and somewhat sticky texture.

Does a chocolate cream pie need to be refrigerated? ›

If a pie contains eggs or dairy products, it should be stored in the refrigerator and not left out at room temperature for more than two hours. Pies that do not contain dairy products, such as fruit pies can be stored, loosely covered at room temperature for up to two days.

Why is it called Boston cream pie instead of cake? ›

A Boston cream pie is a cake with a cream filling. The dessert acquired its name when cakes and pies were baked in the same pans, and the words were used interchangeably. In the late 19th century, this type of cake was variously called a "cream pie", a "chocolate cream pie", or a "custard cake".

What is the difference between a cream pie filling and a custard pie filling? ›

The difference is how the filling comes together: a custard filling is usually baked, while a cream pie filling is not. But we're not here to be fastidious, so you'll spot a few custard pies in the collection below—we promise they'll satisfy just as well whenever a cream pie craving hits.

Why is it no longer called crack pie? ›

Name change

Some food writers and others have criticized naming foods including Crack Pie after addictive substances as insensitive and offensive. In May 2019, Devra First of the Boston Globe criticized the name in a column for making light of addiction by alluding to the addictiveness of crack cocaine.

Why isn't it called crack pie anymore? ›

In the letter addressed both to consumers and employees, Tosi writes that “the old name was getting in the way” of the bakery's core mission “to spread joy and inspire celebration” — essentially making people feel unwelcome. “While change is never easy, we feel this is the right decision,” she writes.

Why is crack pie called crack pie? ›

The name was a reference to crack cocaine — the gag being that the pie was just as addictive as the drug. But an increasing chorus of critics have pointed out that the name makes light of a serious drug epidemic, and one that had an outsize impact on the African American community.

What causes a cream pie to get watery? ›

The watery layer between the meringue and the filling (weeping) is usually caused by undercooking. This is where it is important to put your meringue onto hot filling so it can begin cooking right away.

Why is my cream pie filling too runny? ›

Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, 5-10 minutes until the mixture is thick enough to mound slightly _ until it looks more like pudding than sauce. If it is not cooked sufficiently at this stage, it will be runny even after it is chilled. If you're not sure, cook it more, not less.

Is cornstarch or flour better for fruit pies? ›

Thickening properties: Cornstarch thickens more effectively than flour but needs higher temperatures to thicken. Toss it with sugar first to help it disperse better when it hits liquid.

Does chocolate cream pie go bad? ›

Shelf Life: Refrigerated chocolate pie can typically last for about 3 to 4 days [2]. It is important to refrigerate the pie promptly after it has cooled down to room temperature.

How long is a chocolate cream pie good for? ›

How Long Does Chocolate Cream Pie Last? Chocolate Cream Pie will keep for 2-4 days, covered in the fridge. The crust continues to soften every day that it is stored and the filling can begin to weep at 4 days.

Can chocolate cream pie sit out? ›

Experts say that after cooking cream pies, you should let them cool at room temperature for just 30 minutes, then put them in the refrigerator to complete cooling. They should be kept refrigerated except when you serve them.

What is silk pie made of? ›

At its core, French silk pie is just a chocolate mousse consisting of eggs, cream, chocolate, sugar, and butter. (The building blocks of life!) Its title is accurate: yes, this pie really does have the texture of silk, albeit delicious silk.

What's the difference between chocolate pudding and chocolate mousse? ›

While the ingredients are similar, chocolate pudding is cooked on the stove to activate the cornstarch or flour, depending on the recipe. Mousse is not cooked. It develops its airy texture just from whipped cream.

What is the difference between French silk and chocolate mousse? ›

Chocolate mousse is made by whipping heavy cream and melted chocolate so the combination reaches an aerated, velvety texture. As such, the filling of a French silk pie must be given the whipped cream treatment. The pie's filling initially starts as a pudding-like mixture of butter, eggs, sugar, and chocolate.

What is the original Choco Pie? ›

Choco pies are extremely popular in Asia, although it's original inspiration was an American snack called the moon pie (a noticeable difference between Choco Pie and Moon Pie is that the Choco Pie's filling is soft while the Moon Pie's graham-cracker filling is hard.)
